Swedish “Drömmar” …Cookie Dreams!

Dreams occur in every persons life at some point. We dream when we are asleep and we also have day dreams. Dreams can emerge among all different kinds of people – kids have them and likewise adults.

The famous psychoanalyst Carl Jung (1875-1961) stressed that dreams reveal more than they conceal. Jung suggested that dreams are doing the work of integrating our conscious and unconscious lives – he called this the process of individuation.

Great historical individuals as Martin Luther King Jr. have preached about the concept “Dream”, such as in M. Luther King Jr.’s speech “I have a  Dream” :

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.” (Americanrhetoric, 2012).

Even great musicians as ABBA have mentioned the concept “Dream” in one of their famous songs “I Have A Dream”. 😀

The Swedish Cookie “Drömmar” (in English “Dreams”) is one of the most common cookies in Sweden. You can create many different cookies by adding a variety of different toppings such as adding coconut if you want, add some more caster sugar or dip the bottom of it into dark chocolate. I have tried to bake them with using one of the most common recipes in Sweden. However, I have been a bit controversial and changed the shape of them. I used heart and star shaped cookie cutters when I baked them… but the cookies taste like a dream! You must give it a try!!! 😀 I would recommend you guys who don’t live in Sweden to use Vanilla extract instead of Vanilla sugar, because I have noticed that the Vanilla sugar which you can find abroad don’t have the same taste as the Swedish one. 😀

Finally, before I share the recipe with you guys. I would like to stress that if you have a DREAM. Do not ignore it… try to live your dream as long as it is in a positive spirit when it doesn’t harm other people. Dreams make us keep going in life. Dreams also make us having a bit more positive attitude to the life itself. For every step you take… you will become closer to  fulfill your internal secret dream… and to accomplish happiness… 😀

Happy Dream Baking Everyone! Here comes the recipe! 😀

Recipe (makes 40)

  • 75 gr butter
  • 1 ½ dl caster sugar
  • ½ dl sunflower oil
  • 2 ½ dl plain flour
  • ½ teaspoon Swedish “Hjorthornssalt” or 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon vanilla sugar

Preheat the oven to 150 degrees C.

Put parchment paper on a baking sheet.

Stir room-temperature butter and sugar until fluffy.

Add the oil and continue to whisk until fluffy.

Mix flour, hjorthornsalt (or baking powder) and vanilla sugar in a separate bowl. Pour it into the first bowl with the sugar, butter and oil mixture. Whisk it all together until everything is just incorporated.

Let it rest for about 30 minutes.

Use cookie cutters to make heart and star shape cookies.

Put them on a baking sheet.

Bake the cookies in the middle of the oven for 20 minutes. Do not open the oven door meanwhile they are getting baked in the oven.

The cookies should be “pale yellow” and slightly cracked on the surface. Finally, when the cookies are cold, let them rest in the fridge for a bit to get the perfect flavour. You can store them in the freezer or in the fridge if you want.
